What is Protonix?

Protonix is the brand name of the medication pantoprazole. It is in a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Protonix is used to decrease the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used in the treatment of erosive esophagitis (damage to the esophagus from stomach acid), and other conditions involving excess stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It does not provide immediate relief of heartburn symptoms but it does improve these symptoms when taken as directed over the full length of time.

Some patients require long term treatment with Protonix. Studies show Protonix to cause stomach caner in animal patients, however no cases have shown this in humans taking the medication long term. Proptonix may cause your body to have difficulties absorbing vitamin B-12, causing the body to become deficient, a B-12 supplement may be required.
