What is Meclizine?

 Meclizine is the generic name for Antivert, Bonine, D-Vert, Dramamine, Driminate II, Meclicot, Medivert, Ru-Vert-M,  and Meni-D.  It is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body.

Meclizine is used in the treatment or prevention of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness. Patients may also be prescribed Meclizine to treat symptoms of vertigo (dizziness or spinning sensation) caused by disease that affects your inner ear.

Important Information about Meclizine

If you have liver or kidney disease, asthma, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or urination problems tell your Doctor before taking Meclizine.

Meclizine may impair your thinking or reactions. Avoid driving or doing anything that may require you to be alert when taking Meclizine.

There are many medications that add to the sleepiness created by Meclizine. These medication include; old or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotic pain medicine, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, and medicine for seizures, depression or anxiety medications.

Do not drink when taking Meclizine. Alcohol may increase side effects associated with this medication.

Meclizine Side Effects

Along with the needed effects to meclizine there are also side effects associated with this medication. Patients taking Meclizine may experience drowsiness, fatigue, and dry mouth. Drinking alcohol may increase these side effects. Meclizine also alters the patients reaction time, patients should avoid driving or doing anything that requires them to be alter when taking this medication.

This medication is available by prescription as well ad over the counter. This medication is offered as a oral tablet, oral tablet, chewable, and compounding powder.

Meclizine Dosage and Directions

 

Usual Adult Dose for:

  • Nausea/Vomiting – 25 to 50 mg orally once a day as needed.
  • Vertigo – 25 mg orally 1 to 4 times a day or 50 mg orally twice a day.
  • Motion Sickness – 25 to 50 mg orally once a day as needed. Meclizine should be given 1 hour prior to travel and not exceed 50mg in a 24 hour period.

Usual Pediatric Dose for:

  • Nausea/Vomiting – 12 years and older: 25 to 50 mg orally once a day as needed.
  • Vertigo – 12 years and older: 25 mg orally 1 to 4 times a day or 50 mg orally twice a day.
  • Motion Sickness – 12 years and older: 25 to 50 mg orally once a day as needed. Meclizine should be given 1 hour prior to travel and not exceed 50mg in a 24 hour period.
