What is Hydroxyzine?

 Hydroxyzine is the generic name for Atarax, Vistaril, Hyzine, Vistaject-50, Rezine, Vistacon, Vistacot, and Vistazine.  This medication reduces activity in the central nervous system. Hydroxyzine also acts as an antihistamine, reducing the natural chemical histamine in the body. Symptoms of sneezing and runny nose, or hives on the skin are caused by the chemical Histamine.

Hydroxyzine is commonly used as a sedative to treat anxiety and tension. It is also given as anesthesia when used in combination with other medications. Hydroxyzine is also commonly used to control nausea and vomiting. It may also be used to treat allergic skin reactions such as hives or contact dermatitis.

Hydroxyzine is available in oral capsules, oral suspension or solution, and parenteral injection.

Important Information about Hydroxyzine

If you have a seizure disorder, liver disease, or kidney disease, tell your Doctor before taking Hydroxyzine.

This medication can cause side effects that affect your reactions and thinking process. When taking Hydroxyzine be careful when driving or doing anything that requires you to be alter. Avoid drinking alcohol when taking Hydroxyzine, consumption of alcohol may increase the side effects of Hydroxyzine.

Hydroxyzine Side Effects

Along with the needed effects of Hydroxyzine there are also many side effects associate with Hydroxyzine. Some of which are more serious than others, require medical attention. Common, less serious, side effects to Hydroxyzine include;

  • Drowsiness
  • Decrease in alertness
  • Dry  mouth

More serious side effects to Hydroxyzine that may require medical attention include;

  • tremors
  • confusion
  • seizures
  • restless muscle movements in your eyes, tongue, jaw and neck

Hydroxyzine Use

Hydroxyzine Dosage and Directions

 

Usual Adult Dose for:

  • Anxiety – 50 to 100 mg orally or by IM injection 4 times a day.
  • Pruritus – 25 mg orally or by IM injection 3 to 4 times a day.
  • Sedation – 50 to 100 mg orally or by IM injection.
  • Pain – 25 to 100 mg by IM injection pre- or postoperatively or postpartum.
  • Nausea/Vomiting – 25 to 100 mg by IM injection pre- or postoperatively or postpartum.

Usual Pediatric Dose for:

  • Sedation – 0.6 mg/kg oral dose or 0.5 to 1 mg/kg IM dose.
  • Anxiety – 50 mg orally per day in divided doses for patients less than 6 years of age.  50 to 100 mg orally per day in divided doses for patients 6 years and older.
  • Pruritus – 50 mg orally per day in divided doses for patients less than 6 years of age. 50 to 100 mg orally per day in divided doses for patients 6 years and older.
  • Nausea/Vomiting – 1.1 mg/kg IM dose
